“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”
—Philippians 4:5
A good horse trainer will tell you, the horse always feeds off your energy.
You come in nervous, aggressive, anxious, loud?
The horse feels it. It tenses. It resists. It mirrors that instability.
But walk in calm, gentle, grounded…still confident, but composed?
That horse will meet you with peace. It trusts your posture.
Real talk, my man… this shakes me up!
Because it’s not just horses that respond to energy, it’s people.
Your wife.
Your kids.
Your friends.
Your coworkers.
Your boss.
The community around you.
They all feel what you carry before you ever say a word.
And I’ve lived it. I’ve walked into conversations trying to “lead” but carried a tone that was sharp, impatient, prideful, even if I thought I was just being “direct.”
I’ve tried to fix tension in my marriage with “truth” while my heart posture was off…irritated, defensive, cold.
I’ve tried to discipline my kids while still carrying the stress of the day, and wondered why they didn’t respond with peace.
I’ve walked into rooms at work or church or family gatherings carrying anxiety or pressure instead of peace, and I could feel the atmosphere shift, and not in a good way.
It’s because I was setting the wrong tone.
And just like that horse, people reacted to the atmosphere I brought into the space.
But I can also tell the difference…when my spirit is at ease with the Lord, when I’ve been walking in step with the Spirit, when I’m anchored in Him… everything flows different.
My words carry weight, but not pressure.
My presence calms the room instead of rattling it.
My wife hears me better. My kids draw near.
Even tough conversations land with grace, not tension.
It’s so beautiful to see, and it’s not because I suddenly became a better communicator.
It’s because my posture shifted.
Because here’s the truth:
It’s not just what we say. It’s the spirit behind it that people feel.
You can preach truth all day, but if it’s coming from ego, fear, or frustration, it’s going to repel people.
But speak even hard truth with love, with gentleness, with Spirit led peace, and hearts will open.
Because people don’t just listen with their ears.
They listen with their spirit.
And your posture determines what their spirit receives.
Jesus said His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
He didn’t say that to make us passive or soft.
He said it because His tone was rooted in peace.
He was bold, but never frantic.
He was firm, but always full of grace.
He was direct, but never disrespectful.
That’s the tone we’ve got to learn.
Because if our homes feel chaotic… if our marriage feels combative… if our parenting feels like constant correction and no connection… maybe it’s not just their resistance.
Maybe it’s our presence.
We can’t keep expecting peace if we’re not bringing peace into the room.
We can’t expect people to listen with their hearts if we’re only speaking from our ego.
We can’t expect our kids to be calm if we’re constantly rattled.
We can’t expect our wives to feel safe if our spirit doesn’t know how to rest.
We can’t expect our coworkers to follow if we lead with pressure instead of vision and peace.
The tone we carry will set the temperature everywhere we go.
CHALLENGE STATEMENT:
Today, take a long look in the mirror, what energy are you really carrying? Not just in what you say, but in how you show up. What’s the spirit behind your words? The atmosphere you bring? Are you leading with peace or pressure? Gentleness or control? Let God check your posture. And then walk into every room with a Spirit that reflects Jesus…calm, strong, gentle, grounded. That’s how you lead hearts.
Prayer:
God, I’ve led with the wrong energy so many times. I’ve let pressure, pride, and stress control my tone. I’ve hurt people not just by what I said, but how I said it. But I want to be different. I want to be a man who carries Your peace. A man who leads with gentleness. A man whose presence shifts the room because it’s rooted in You. I want to walk in the Spirit so that every relationship at home, at work, in my community…feels the steady, calm authority that comes from You. Teach me to lead with peace. Let my posture reflect Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
